Abstract

This research studied about the use of hypnoteaching method in speaking class at MAN 3 Malang. The researcher is interested in this study based on the fact that speaking is one of the essential skills to support others skill, those are reading, listening and writing. Besides, the use of method determines the success of teaching and learning process. The research problems in this study are 1) what are the hypnoteaching method steps which applied by English teacher in teaching speaking at MAN 3 Malang? 2) What are the problems faced by the English teacher in applying hypnoteaching method in teaching speaking at MAN 3 Malang? 3) How does the teacher solve the problems in applying hypnoteaching method in teaching speaking at MAN 3 Malang? The aims of this study were to investigate hypnoteaching steps and problems that the teacher faced in her speaking class and describe the teacherÂ’s strategies in solving those problems. This study used qualitative descriptive design to obtain and analyze the data. The subject of this study was one English teacher at MAN 3 Malang who applied Hypnoteaching method for teaching speaking in eleven classes. Interview and observation were used to collect the data. Structured interview was chosen to get information about the application of hypnoteaching method in her speaking class. Besides, the researcher used non participant observation. The aims of this observation were to verify the interview information and to get some information that was not covered from the interview. Base on the data analysis, the researcher found five steps of hypnoteaching method that the teacher applied in her speaking class. Those were pacing, leading, use positive statement, giving compliment, and modeling. In addition, the researcher found tree problems and those problems solving in the process of teaching and learning. First, the students still do not know the appropriate grammar that they have to use in speaking and the teacher solved it by applying building rapport, making group and giving strong motivation. Second, the students have low participation and less confidence and the teacherÂ’s strategy to solve that problems were by creating an interesting topic and task game. Last, the teacher faced unexpected condition, such as the students ignored teacherÂ’s instruction and they looked so tired and sleepy and the teacher solved it by creating simple and fresh game, and also task game in order to create fun and motivation for students. It can be concluded that the use of hypnoteaching method identified the success of teaching speaking.
