Abstract

English is an international language. English is the first foreign language in Indonesia and it used by many communities including student. One element that is very important in learning English is vocabulary. Vocabulary is the main key of learning English and it is very essential to improve four important skills for human. Those four skills are listening, speaking, reading and writing. There is no way to improve those four skills without studying vocabulary in the first place. In teaching vocabulary, a teacher needs to use some important elements such as teaching media and teaching source. In this research the writer wants to compare the effectiveness of using flashcards and pop songs in the process of teaching learning vocabulary. This research is aimed to know whether there is any significance difference in the vocabulary ability between students who taught by using flashcards and those who taught by using pop songs, it is also to find out which one is more effective to increase studentÂ’s vocabulary ability between using flashcards and pop songs. In conducting the research the writer used descriptive comparative research design. The subjects of this study were two classes of the first grade students at SMP N 1 Bobotsari, Purbalingga. Furthermore, the instruments used were observation and tests. The result of this study showed that the mean scores of the students who are taught by using flashcards is 80.8 and the mean scores of the students who are taught by using pop songs is 76. So the mean scores of the students who are taught by using flashcards is higher than the students who are taught by using pop songs. In the end of the research the researcher take conclusion that using flashcards in teaching vocabulary is better than using pop songs.
