Abstract

In is study the writer is interested to analyzed the teaching learning activities of speaking skill in SMP English Textbook based on the 2004 English curriculum. In detail, this study is attempt to answer (1) the teaching learning activities of speaking in English on Sky published by Erlangga, (2) the teaching learning activities of speaking in English in Context published by Bumi Aksara, (3) the teaching learning activities of speaking in Smart Steps published by Ganeca exact, (4) the most varieties of speaking activities among the three textbooks, (5) the fewest varieties of speaking activities among the three textbooks, and (6) the teaching learning activities of speaking in SMP English textbook based on 2004 English Curriculum. In analyzing the textbook, the writer used descriptive research design. The population of this study is all the English textbooks for SMP of the first year based on the 2004 English Curriculum, and the sample of this research are English on Sky published by Erlangga, English in Context published by Bumi Aksara and Smart Steps published by Ganeca exact. The instruments used are observation and documentation. The findings of this research shows that the teaching leaning activities of speaking in English on Sky published by Erlangga are Expression, dialogs and conversation, role play, completing, matching and describing, fill in the blanks and practicing, mime story, telling story, practicing dialogue using the picture. Then the teaching learning activities of speaking in English in Context published by Bumi Aksara are Expression, dialogue and conversation, role play, describing, telling story, telling about similarities and differences, mime story, answering question orally. The last the teaaching learning activities of speaking in Smart Steeps published by Ganeca Exact are expression, dialogue and conversation, role play, completing, taking turn, matching, responding, telling story, telling about similarities and differences, fill in the list, and describing. Among the three textbooks, the Smart Steps published by Ganeca Exact has the most varieties of speaking activities. Further, in English in Context published by Bumi Aksara has the fewest varieties of speaking activities. Based on the result, the teaching learning activities of speaking in SMP English textbook based on 2004 English Curriculum contains of expression, dialogue and conversation, role play, completing, matching and describing, fill in the blanks and practicing, mime story, telling story, telling about similarities and the differences, practicing dialogue using the picture, answering question orally, taking turn and responding.
