Abstract

Teaching techniques is one of the important parts of success in teaching and learning process. Especially in bilingual class, in a bilingual class the students are demanded to use their foreign language as well as their native language. In this program, English not only used in English subject, but also in science subject. Therefore, the teacher in this program has to motivate the students to speak English well. So that, the teacher needs among other appropriate teaching techniques and the teacher should know how to implement the techniques appropriately. This study was focused on the teaching techniques applied by the teacher in teaching English to the second grade students in a bilingual class at SMPN 1 Siliragung Banyuwangi. Consequently the purpose of this study were: (1) to know the kinds of techniques the teacher used in teaching English in the bilingual class of SMPN 1 Siliragung Banyuwangi; (2) to describe the way the teacher implemented the techniques in teaching English in the bilingual class of SMPN 1 Siliragung Banyuwangi; (3) to know the studentsÂ’ perception of the techniques used by the teacher in teaching English in the bilingual class. In this study, the descriptive design was used to obtain the data concerning the research problem. The research subjects of this study were an English teacher and 27 students in the second grade who are siting in the bilingual class. There were three instruments used in collecting a data: observation, interview, and questionnaire. The research finding showed that the techniques applied by the teacher in teaching English were lecturing technique, discussion technique, direct experience technique, and game technique. Furthermore, the teacher applied the techniques in three ways: pre teaching, whilst teaching, and post teaching. The finding also showed that the students had a good perception, since the mean score of the studentsÂ’ perception was 65.9
