Abstract

The technique of teaching reading used by the teacher in senior high school is one of the factors to achieve the goal of language learning activity. A teacher has an important role in composing an interactive situation in order to motivate the students to learn. Before teaching, the teacher should know the target of his teaching to determine the appropriate technique to be applied in the teaching and learning process. By using an appropriate technique in teaching reading, the target of teaching and learning will be reached. Thus, in this study the writer is interested in describing (1) the techniques in teaching reading used by the teachers at SMAN 3 Tuban, (2) the significant problem faced by the teachers in using the techniques, and (3) the teachers’ strategy to solve the problems. This study used descriptive research because it was intended to get information concerning the current status of phenomena in the techniques of teaching reading. The research subjects in this study are three teachers who are teaching English in SMAN 3 TUBAN. To collect the data, the researcher used two kinds of instruments, there are: interview and observation. Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher concluded that; (1) The techniques in teaching reading used by the English teachers at SMAN 3 Tuban are: Cloze Instruction, Directed Reading Activity (DRA), Listening Thinking Activity (LTA), Reciprocal Teaching and Repeated Reading. (2) The significant problems faced by the English teachers in using their techniques are: there are some students who are talking each other when the teacher read the text would makes the other students cannot concentrate the lesson, the pronunciation of some students are not clear will make the teacher is difficult to hear the students when they read the text, and there are some students who are “passive” in the group discussion. (3) The English teachers’ strategy to solve the problems in using the techniques are: the teacher ask the students who are talking each other to read the text, the teacher asking the students to read the text twice or three times loudly, and the teacher asking the “passive” students to presents the result of group discussion.
