Abstract

Literature is an art form that generally means an imaginative writing from that the functional word is created. By reading literary works especially novel, the readers can improve their understanding about life in every aspect. Novel is also one of the literary works which serves fiction beside short story.Novel can give a picture of life with all of richness, complexity, and contradiction.This research aims to find out Erin Gruwell's teaching techniques and the students' responses toward her techniques. There were two problems in this study. The problems were: (1)what are the Teaching Techniques used by Erin Gruwell in The Novel "The Freedom Writers Diary? (2)how are The Students' Responses toward Erin Gruwell's Teaching Techniques in The Novel "The Freedom Writers Diary? This research design used descriptive qualitative. The Writer focused on deep understanding of Gruwell's teaching techniques. The study observed the phenomenon in teaching techniques and students' responses toward teaching techniques by Gruwell. The technique of this study was library research because the data were taken from the novel itself and other relevant sources in the form of books, encyclopedias, and dictionaries. Objective approach was used in this study because the writer was not necessary to study the author's life, but just analyzing the content of the work itself. The result of the research showed that (1) Gruwell used game, field trip, and role play. The used of the techniques were fitted with the students. Therefore, learning through those techniques helped students improve their English and more deeply understand English not only theoretically but also the students can improve their English by themselves. (2)The students' responses toward the techniques were positive, students enjoyed toward the game, they were enthusiast to make a movie, and they were happy by the field trip. In order to make students interest, Gruwell fixed her material with background of their students' neighborhood. These responses indicated students can accept each other.
