Abstract

The speaking skill is very important for students. It needs to be taught to the students at school. Teachers use many kinds of techniques to help the students to speak more effectively. Running dictation game is one of those techniques which could activate the students' learning. In this study, the researcher analyzed the effect of running dictation game on the student's speaking ability at the second year of SMPN 1 Pogalan Trenggalek. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design. In this case, the experimental group was given a treatment by using running dictation game and the control group was treated without using running dictation game. The population was all students of grade VIII of SMPN 1 Pogalan who were divided into nine classes. The researcher selected the control group and the experimental group by using purposive sampling technique because the researcher chose the sample of the study based on the classes which have similar low mean score in their middle test. As a result, 8C and 8D classes were chosen as the sample of this study. Then, the researcher determined which group belonged to experimental group and which group belonged to control group. From the average of middle test score, it was found that class 8C got 68.76 and class 8D got 66.62. The result showed that class 8D was lower than class 8C, thus class 8D was chosen as experimental group and 8C was chosen as control group. This study started from November 12th until December 5th 2012. It was about 2-3 weeks. The pre-test was practicing conversation. For the post test, the students were asked to describe picture and practice a conversation about the picture. Two raters were used in this study to get the objective score; they were the English teacher of SMPN 1 Pogalan and the researcher herself. The scores were tabulated to get the mean score. Based on the result of data analysis on the post-test the experimental and control groups, the students' speaking ability of the experimental group was better than those in control group. This was because the mean score of the post test of the experimental group was 75.79 while the mean score of the control group 68.52. After getting the mean score, SPSS program was applied to see which hypothesis was accepted. The result showed that, t-ratio of the post test was 4.093. By using the level significance of 0.05 and the degree of freedom of 57, the t-table value was 2.021. It means that the value of t-ratio was greater than t-table. It is concluded that Ho (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and Hi (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. Thus, the hypothesis stated that the students who are thought by using running dictation game show better ability than without running dictation game is accepted. It mean
