Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is not an easy task for English teachers. The success of teaching English is influenced by the techniques which are used by the teachers. Game is one of the techniques which is good in teaching English. In this study, the researcher intended to investigate the games used by the teacher in teaching English at the fourth grade at SDN Sumbersari 01 Malang. The purposes of this study were to know the kinds of games used by the teacher in teaching English, the problems faced by the teacher in using the games, and also the ways to the teacher solve the problems in using games in teaching English. In this research, the researcher used a descriptive research design. The subject of this study was the English teacher who taught at SDN Sumbersari 01 Malang. To collect the data, the researcher did some observation and interview to the teacher. Based on the result of data analysis, the teacher used three games in teaching English in the class for one semester. They were board game, matching game, and exchanging game. In applying those games, the teacher found three problems. The first problem was related to the time management, such as the teacher need much time to prepare the games and explain the rules of the games. The second problem was the teacher got a difficulty to find the game materials. The last problem was related to the place. To solve those problems the teacher used three ways. To solve the first problem, the teacher used some tricks to make the time effective, such as preparing the game before the class. She also used some tricks when the students were noisy in order to get attention from them. In solving the second problem, she had to find the game materials from other sources such as reading the magazines and newspapers, watching television programs, and browsing the Internet. Related to the last problem, in order to make the classroom larger to play the games, the teacher arranged some desks by moving them into the back row.
