Abstract

Teaching English is taught not only in formal education but also is taught in non formal education. In addition, the students who study in non formal education are little bit different from those in formal education. Almost students in non formal education have low motivation to study because they have more duties besides studying. The teacher in non formal education is forced to arrange a good teaching and learning model for their students. Based on the reasons above, the writer intended to investigate the implementation of CTL approach used by the teacher in teaching English at non formal education Kejar Paket C in PKBM Kartini Malang. The purposes of this research was to know: 1) the implementation of CTL approach used by the English teacher at non formal education Kejar Paket C in PKBM Kartini Malang 2) the problems faced by the English teacher in implementing CTL approach 3) and the teacherÂ’s ways solve the problem. In this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research and the subject of this study was English teachers who taught English at Kejar Paket C in PKBM Kartini Malang. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of instruments: interview and observation. After the data collected, it was found out that the implementation of CTL approach at non formal education Kejar Paket C in PKBM Kartini Malang could be seen from the seven components. Those are constructivism, questioning, inquiry, learning community, modeling, reflection, and authentic assessment. In implementing CTL approach the teacher faced some problems; those are problem in constructivism, problem in inquiry, and general problem that commonly faced by the English teacher. In solving problem of constructivism, teacher tried to repeat and translate her explanation in order to make students understand the material. In coping problem of inquiry, teacher stimulated the students to find the difficult vocabulary when they were doing exercise. Moreover, to solve general problem in building studentÂ’s motivation the English teacher at Kejar Paket C created interest learning activity. So, students would be enthusiastic to involve in learning process.
