Abstract

The success of listening instruction is determined by the types of material and the media used to present the listening material. Therefore, the teacher should recognize to use the media and make it appropriate with the materials taught. Using media such as video, movies, picture, and so forth, are suggested because of its importance and benefits. This study was focused on audiovisual media and techniques used in teaching listening at Second Year Students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The objectives of this study were to know the kinds of audiovisual media used by teacher in teaching English listening of second year students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang, to know how the teacher used the media in teaching English listening of second year students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang, and to know the teacherÂ’s perception of the use of media to improve studentsÂ’ listening skill at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative because this study designed to obtain information related to current status of phenomena related to the audio visual media and the teacherÂ’s perception to the media, and the data of this study were not presented in number but in narration. After analyzing the data, it could be seen that the audiovisual media which had been used to teach listening at the second grade of SMA Muhammadiyah I Malang were projection machine, moving pictures, television, multimedia, tape recorder, CD cassette, and video. In using the media, the teacher usually prepared the materials at first before teaching listening. Then, she selected the media which was appropriate for the selected materials. Then, the teacher set the media before she applied it in listening class. The teacherÂ’s perception of using media was that media played an important role in teaching, especially teaching listening skill. Media could help the students improve their listening skills. The use of media made it easier for the teacher to deliver the materials. It can be concluded that the teacher followed the modern technology to present the audiovisual in the classroom. Relating to the application of audiovisual media, the teacher had appropriate way because she selected the media by suited with the materials. In addition, her perception about using media had been appropriate because she felt that media was the important element which made students easy to learn.
