Abstract

Language is a tool to communicate with other people. But, language can differ based on the gender. How women use language is different from men. It means that women have special language which men do not have. The phenomenon of womenÂ’s language style came into use in English debaters of ILF University of Muhammadiyah Malang when they produced language in doing debate training. This study focuses on the kinds of language style used by female members of ILF in debate activities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to know the kinds of language style used by female members of ILF University of Muhammadiyah Malang in debate activities. The research design of the study was descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were the female debaters of ILF. The observation and recording were used as the instrument of this study. Observing and recording the debate activities to the subject were used to collect the data. The finding showed that there were two femaleÂ’s language features used by female debaters of ILF, they were lexical hedges and tag question. The lexical hedges were used by female debaters because they might to avoid something definite and keep their option open. Then, the tag question was used because they might want the opposite team agree with their argument. Meanwhile, super polite form was only used by one female debater when there was an incident happened. The other features, for example rising intonation on declarative, empty adjective and the others were not used by female debaters of ILF.
