Abstract

Literature is the expression of literary work that uses society as source and object in coming up within what happen in the social environment. One of literary works is novel. Novel is a long prose fiction that describes about real life. This study was conducted to analyze Helen's suffering in George Sullivan's novel "Helen Keller". The analysis was focused on the Helen's suffering, the causes of Helen's suffering and how Helen solves her suffering. This study used descriptive qualitative research design because the writer described and interpreted the phenomena that existed in the novel without presenting numbers. The technique that used was library research. Objective approach was used in this study because the writer was not necessary to study the author's life, but just analyzing the content of the work itself. The data were taken from the events, dialogues, and quotations of paragraphs that were presented in the novel. The result of this study showed that Helen got physical and mental sufferings. Her physical suffering was she became deaf and blind. Her mental suffering were: (1) Helen felt alone, and (2) frustration because of rejection from Annie. Then, the cause of Helen's physical suffering was she got serious ill. The causes of her mental suffering were: (1) she felt difficult to interact, and (2) she became uncontrollable. Helen's ways to solve her sufferings by using braille, using hand signal, and she is learning to eat with a spoon from Annie.
