Abstract

Indonesian students are not always enthusiastic to learn English. They need a motivation. Motivation is an important aspect for learner to learn a language. Therefore, motivation is included as one of principles in language learning. The study focused on English Department studentÂ’s motivation in choosing an elective subject at university of Muhammadiyah Malang. The objectives of this study were to know the English Department studentsÂ’ motivations in choosing English for Young Learner, Business English, Translation, and to identify the types of English Department studentsÂ’ motivations in choosing an elective subject. The research design of this study was qualitative design because this study was to design to get information related to the studentsÂ’ motivation in choosing English for Young Learner, Business English, and Translation as elective subject. After analyzing the data, it was found that: 1) The students chose English for Young Learner based on motivation: likeness, learning, feeling capable, determination, interest, and having competence, and having good achievement in this subject. Only few students stated that following friends, parentsÂ’ instruction, expecting to get praise from parents, avoiding parentsÂ’ anger and other elective subject, feeling incapable and dealing difficulties in the other elective subjects became their motivation to choose English for Young Learner subject; 2) The students chose Business English as the elective subject based on like, interest, curiosity, learning, their own determination, having competence, seeing Business English as the most enjoyable, and getting good achievement in Business English. While studentsÂ’ motivation based on other peopleÂ’s influence, obeying parentsÂ’ instruction and avoiding parentsÂ’ anger were less found in this subject; 3) The students chose Translation because of like, curiosity, interest, felt challenged, self determination, feeling capable, getting good achievement, and seeing Translation as the most enjoyable subject, learning and having competence in Translation subject; and 4) The students had both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to choose the elective subject. It can be concluded that the students had both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to choose the elective subject. However, the intrinsic motivations more dominantly influenced them in choosing the elective subject.
