Abstract

Students often do some errors in learning English not only in speech but also in written forms. For the written language, students should understand one of the components, that is grammar. Although many students have learned English from elementary school until university, the fact shows that grammar is still one of the big problems for them. They often get difficulties in mastering it and they also make errors. There are many aspects of grammar that students find difficulties, one of them is subject-verb agreement. Based on the fact, the writer is interested in analyzing the errors of subject- verb agreement in the writing skill and the causes of the errors of fifth semester students of English Department, UMM. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research because the purpose of this study were to describe the student’s error of using subject-verb agreement in writing skill and the causes of the errors. The population of this study was the writing class students of fifth semester in the academic year of 2012 – 2013. Class A and E are chosen as the sample of this study by using cluster sampling. This study used documents and questionnaires as instruments to get the data. The documents were the students’ writing paragraphs. Based on the data analysis, the students made 116 subject-verb agreement errors from 50 students’ paragraphs. The types of subject verb agreement errors were 100 errors of basic subject-verb agreement, 9 errors of subject-verb agreement: using expressions of quantity, 4 errors of subject-verb agreement: using there + be, and 3 errors of making verbs agreement after certain words. However, there were no errors of subject-verb agreement: some irregularities, and making inverted verbs agree. Based on the number of each type of subject-verb agreement errors, it was found that the most errors made by the students were basic subject-verb agreement error (100 errors). The students errors were caused by three types. The types of the causes of errors were inter-lingual error, intra-lingual error, and hypothesizing false concepts. This shows that the students still get difficulties in using subject-verb agreement.
