Abstract

Speaking skill is very important in our life because it is as an important tool to communicate each other. With communication, people can express their ideas, opinions and feelings to others. The success of teaching speaking is influenced by the technique which is used by the teacher. By using a good technique the teacher is able to attract the students more active in speaking class. In this study, the writer intended to investigate the techniques of teaching speaking used by the English teacher of grade XI in bilingual class at MAN 3 Malang. The purposes of this research were to know: (1) teaching techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking in bilingual class, (2) the implementation of the techniques, and (3) the difficulties in applying those techniques. In this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research and the subject of this study was one of English teachers in bilingual class who taught grade XI at MAN 3 Malang. To collect the data, the writer did some observation and interview to the teacher. The result of this study showed that the techniques used by the teacher of grade XI students in teaching speaking were acing from script, instant comment, prepared talks, discussion, storytelling and game. These techniques were applied by the teacher in order to make the students speak actively. The teacher sometimes combined some techniques in their classroom activities. It was intended to make the learning activity more attractive and interesting. In applying those techniques there were some difficulties that come from the students themselves. The students had low self-confidence in doing the activities in the class. Besides, the students also felt ashamed in expressing their ideas.
