Abstract

In our everyday life, English is an international language used for communication among people in the world and also have contacted with culture. Culture helps to know what can do as individuals and responsibilities are as member of a group. As the part of Javanese culture, the existence of Reyog Ponorogo dance will support the national culture. The purposes of this study were to know the dominant characters and the definition of each dominant character on Reyog Ponorogo dance. As a system, language is constructed in such a way that it characterized the knowledge of the language. Communication among people is possible, because each speaker shared of language knowledge. At the same time, language is a manifestation of the culture where it is spoken. This study used descriptive qualitative as a research design with ethnographic approach on the cultural activities particularly the Reyog Ponorogo dance. Furthermore, it was one approach describe culture or aspects of culture. The research subject of this study was the characters of Reyog Ponorogo dancer who knew well about Reyog Ponorogo dance. The instruments of this research were observations, interview and documentation. The finding of this study revealed of five dominant characters on Reyog Ponorogo dance. They were: First is Warok. It is the figure of people who look spooky and scary figures in the history of people who are good in terms of mystical and extraordinary ability of humans generally. Second is Jathil (Jathilan). It is the youthful handsome horsemen riding horses made of weaved bamboo. Third is Bujang Anom (Pujangga Anom). It is rough youthful man wearing red mask. Fourth is Klono Sewandono it is roles as the King of Ponorogo. And the last is Singa Barong (Reyog). It is the people who wear mask of lion head.
