Abstract

In Indonesia, Bahasa Indonesia becomes a second language. So, every student has a must in learning this language. It also happens to autistic students; they have to learn Bahasa Indonesia as other students do. Autistic students are difficult to learn language as the other students; they have been helped by some media. It is also done after they have mastered basic verbal communication and behavioral therapy. The teacher has prepared the medium of flash card as one of the media to teach autistic students. With media, the teacher will be easy to deliver the subject in teaching the autistic students. The statements of problems of this study were 1) how is the process of using the medium of flash cards for autistic studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery in SDLB Bagian Autis Dr. Idayu 2 Kabupaten Malang, and 2) what are the teachersÂ’ difficulties in teaching vocabulary to autistic students in SDLB Bagian Autis Dr. Idayu 2 Kabupaten Malang. In conducting the research the writer used qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were the autistic students in SDLB Bagian Autis Dr. Idayu 2 Kabupaten Malang. Furthermore, the instruments used were observation, interview and document analysis. The result of this study showed that the process of teaching vocabulary using the medium of flash cards in SDLB Bagian Autis Dr. Idayu 2 Kabupaten Malang was this. a. The teacher showed the pictures. b. The teacher mentioned the each name of pictures. c. The teacher repeated one name of the picture several times. d. The student repeated what the teachers had said. e. The teacher repeated the name of picture again while showing the real objects if the student could not say the word correctly. f. The teacher showed two pictures in front of the student. g. The teacher pointed at which picture the student had said. h. The student mentioned the name of pictures again. i. The teacher continued the steps with another name of picture after the student could mention the word. The teachersÂ’ difficulties were this. a. The students attended the class rarely, so that the process of teaching took a long time because the teachers had to repeat the material again b. The therapy was only done at school and the parents did not repeat the material of the therapy. c. The studentsÂ’ easily got bored and they have limited concentration. d. The students have limited vocabulary mastery. The process of using flash cards is same in other material. It depended on the media that were used in every meeting.
