Abstract

Basically every country has its own culture which makes them unique although sometimes it is contradicted with another culture, which is called cultural clash. Cultural Clash Reflected in the Film Bend It Like Beckham became the writer’s interest to study because she wanted to disclose the clash within society caused by cultural difference of English and Indians in this film. The objective of this study was to describe cultural clash between Indian and English reflected in the film “Bend It Like Beckham”. The design of this study was a descriptive qualitative research because this study deals with human behavior in social phenomena, in this case cultural clash in the Bend It Like Beckham film, and the data were presented in the form of words, not in numeric data. This study used literature sociology approach because cultural clash is one of cases related to social life. In collecting the data, the writer watched the film for several times, chose the data dealing cultural clash, identified the data which were categorized into cultural clash, and rewrote all of the data about cultural clash depicted in the film. The finding showed that the clash of those Indian and English cultures caused a conflict for the main characters because: 1) cultural clash about playing football, in this case, Jess was disappointed when she was forbidden to play football, while Jules was annoyed seeing that fact because she had just got her as partner in playing football; 2) cultural clash about relationship between males and females, in this case, misunderstanding occurred between Indian and English characters, Indians saw the girl impolite because of hugging and kissing the boy, while English saw the girl lesbian because of hugging and kissing the girl; 3) cultural clash about mixed marriage, in this case, the main character’s love with Irish boy became a problem.
