Abstract

As one of the English skills, speaking has an important role in teaching and learning process. Speaking is verbal use of language to communicate with others. It means that speaking is very important because it is as a tool to communicate each other. Unfortunately, many students have difficulties to master speaking skill such as wrong pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary. Speaking needs good pronunciation and intonation. Besides, some important aspects are fluency and the accuracy. Therefore, teaching speaking is needed by students to get the way to speak English well. In teaching speaking, the teachers must use appropriate technique in order that students will be easily to express their ideas through communicating efficiently. If the students have communicated efficiently, it means that teaching speaking is success. The purposes of this research can be formulated as: (1) to know the techniques used by ESP Lecturer in teaching speaking at Mechanical Engineering University of Muhammadiyah Malang, and (2) to know how ESP Lecturer apply the techniques in teaching speaking at Mechanical Engineering University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The researcher took an ESP lecturer of speaking Iat mechanical engineering of UMM as his research subject. To collect the data, the researcher used two kinds of instruments: interview and non-participantsÂ’ observations. The research finding showed that seven techniques were applied in teaching speaking. They were interview, oral report/presentation, discussion or conversation, question and answer, sentence correction, retelling story from written stimulus, using picture or picture story.
