Abstract

Vocabulary is an important element needed by the learners in studying the foreign language to communicate in the target language. Therefore, vocabulary mastery has important role in learning English. The more the learners build it, the more easily they will learn. The writer is interested in studying the technique of teaching English vocabulary at SMPN 1 Randuagung Lumajang because this school is located in countryside and the time allocation for learning English is less. The objectives of this study were to know the teaching techniques used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary at SMPN 1 Randuagung Lumajang, to know the dominant techniques used by the teacher, and to know the way the teachers apply the dominant techniques in the class at SMPN 1 Randuagung Lumajang. The design of this study was descriptive design because the researcher wanted to describe certain information concerning the technique of teaching English vocabulary at SMPN 1 Randuagung Lumajang. The subject of this study was the English teacher for the first year students at SMPN 1 Randuagung Lumajang. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of instruments: interview and observation. The finding showed that the researcher found that the teacher used all kinds of techniques of teaching vocabulary. They were visual, mime and gesture, use of illustrative situation, use of synonymy and definition, contrasts and opposites, scale, examples of the type, translation, asking others, using a dictionary, and contextual guesswork. The dominant techniques of vocabulary teaching used were use of dictionary and translation techniques. In applying the use of dictionary technique, the teacher gave reading text to the students. Then, the students were instructed to look for the difficult words. Then, the teacher translated the difficult words into Indonesian when the students could not find the meaning of the difficult words in the dictionary. In conclusion, the teacher had recognized various kinds of techniques for teaching vocabulary. However, the teacher more dominantly used use of dictionary and translation technique. The implementation of the dominant techniques had been appropriate.
