Abstract

This research aimed at the correlation between students’ motivation and their speaking ability at STT RRI Malang. This study tried to investigate the students’ motivation in learning speaking skill. This research was based on the fact that the students still face difficulties in developing English skill in their daily communication. The students need some extra activities related to English to practice their speaking and motivate them in improving their speaking skill. Some extra activities are those such as study clubs, extracurricular English conversation, or English competition. This study used quantitative research. The researcher applied the descriptive correlation research to gather the data. The correlational research involves collecting data to determine a relationship which exists between two or more variables. In this research, there are two variables. They are motivation (as x variable) and speaking ability (as y variable). The population in this study was the first semester students of the D1 2012/2013 at STT RRI Malang consisting of fourteen classes. In this research, the researcher used the stratified proportional random sampling for taking the sample. The researcher took 20 % of the population in each class. In this research, there were two instruments. They were the questionnaire and the documentation check-list. To collect the data, firstly the researcher generated the data from questionnaire and calculated it into Likert Scale to find students’ motivation scores. Secondly, the researcher used the middle-test scores taken from lecturer who taught speaking class. The two kinds of data were then computed to find the correlation coefficient by using the Pearson’s Product Moment formula. After the scores had been computed, the researcher found that “r” value was higher than “r“ table. It means the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Hi) is accepted. This shows that there is a positive correlation between students’ motivation and their speaking ability at STT RRI Malang.
