Abstract

Self-disclosure on social media serves as a coping strategy for adolescents when confronted with loneliness. Loneliness may evoke feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emptiness in adolescents; however, through self-disclosure, they can discover happiness and establish connections with others. This study posits that self-control functions as a moderator variable, modifying the impact of loneliness on adolescent self-disclosure on social media. The research aimed to examine self-control as a moderator variable for the effect of loneliness on self-disclosure on social media and employed a quantitative approach with a sample of 264 early adolescents. Purposive sampling was utilized for subject selection, and research instruments included the self-disclosure scale, UCLA Loneliness scale, and self-control scale. Data analysis employed moderated regression analysis (MRA). Results indicated that loneliness is not the primary factor driving adolescents to self-disclose on social media. Furthermore, the findings confirmed that self-control does not act as a moderator of the influence of loneliness on adolescents' self-disclosure on social media. Self-disclosure on social media emerges as a common aspect of every individual's life and serves as a coping strategy for adolescents experiencing loneliness.
