Abstract

Grammar is important to be learnt because it is the key to construct the language. Grammar helps us construct the words to become sentences understandable for other people for communication. Games as media of teaching English may help the students study languages. "Phrazzle Me" is one of the games that may help students learn grammar, especially tenses. The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not teaching English using "Phrazzle Me" game can improve the students' grammar mastery. This research used quasi- experimental research design because all the students of the eighth grade (as the population) were already organized into their four classes and the researcher was not permitted to randomize the subjects into experimental and control groups. In this research, cluster sampling was used as the technique in choosing the sample. The researcher took two classes as the sample randomly and identified each of them into the experimental group and the control group, so that class 8C was the experimental group and 8B was the control group. In this case, the experimental group was given the treatment using "Phrazzle Me" game and the control group was taught without using "Phrazzle Me" game. In this research, the instrument was grammar test which consisted of 40 multiple choice questions. Based on the result of pre test, it was found that there was no significant difference on the students' grammar mastery between the experimental group and the control group. The pre test mean score of the experimental group was 43.85 and the control group was 42.21. The findings of the research showed that that "Phrazzle Me" game gave significant improvement to the students' grammar mastery of the eighth grade students. It was supported from the post test result showing that the mean score of the experimental group was 56.10 while the mean score of the control group was 46.02. Moreover, after being computed by using t-test, the result of t-test was 2.75, the t- value at .05 level of significance in the degree of freedom (df = 50) is 2.01. It showed that the result of the t-test is higher than the t-table. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis stated that the "Phrazzle Me" game improves the students' grammar mastery.
