Abstract

A short story is a brief work of literature, usually written in a narrative prose. It typically reveals characters in dramatic scenes, in moments of action, and in ex-changes of dialogues. By reading short stories, the reader will get the knowledge, such as vocabulary, spelling, and figurative language. This study is an attempt to analyze the use of figurative language in Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Fall of the House of Usher. Figurative language is a standard order of words that users of a language apprehend in order to achieve some special meaning or effect. The research object in this study was a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. This study used objective approach because the analysis was related to the literary work itself without studying the authorÂ’s life. Moreover, this research used descriptive qualitative in attempt to describe the meaning by analyzing language, not presenting the data in numeric analysis, but in the form of words. Based on the analysis and discussion of findings, 59 figurative languages were found to be used in "The Fall of the House of Usher" short story by Edgar Allan Poe. There were sixteen personifications, six metaphors, three anaphoras, fourteen alliterations, four oxymorons, three hyperboles, two similes, and eleven symbols. The connotative meanings of those figurative languages are the stories about death, full of mystery. Edgar Allan Poe made use of such figurative language in the story to transmit his messages.
