Abstract

Teaching strategy is a specific strategy planned and used by the teacher for delivering the lesson or solving the problem in conveying the material in the class to achieve the aim of learning. Therefore, teaching strategy plays an important role in teaching learning process. Furthermore, SD plus Al-Kautsar is one of schools in Malang which is used the teaching strategy based on students' multiple intelligences. Multiple intelligences means various level of a human's intelligence across a range of intellectual area, which emphasize that each person is genius by his own way. It means that each person has more than one different intelligences and each person has a most dominant intelligence. This research was conducted for the purpose of analysing the English teaching strategies based on students' multiple intelligences used in teaching the third grade at SD plus Al-Kautsar Malang. In addition, the researcher aimed to investigate the problems faced by the teacher in implementing the strategies and their ways to solve those problem. Qualitative design was employed within this research. The data were taken from the teachers who teach the third grade students at SD plus Al-Kautsar Malang. The data were the teachers' answer as the result of interview, observation checklist, the observation field note, and the document analysis. From the analysis, some findings were gained. The research finding showed that the English teacher used reading strategy, telling story strategy, journal writing strategy, visualization strategy, picture sign strategy, dance strategy, pantomime strategy, body language strategy, singing strategy, group discussion strategy, outdoor class strategy, and plant as props strategy. The selections of these strategy were based on the theme used by teachers in delivering the material and the tendency of students' intelligences in each class. Moreover, the teachers faced some problems in implementing the teaching strategies for students' multiple intelligences and in coping with those problems. The problems which were emerged in the third grade of SD plus Al-Kautsar Malang were classified into two big major problems: the students were at all different levels, and they were uncooperative. In order to solve the problem, the teachers took some actions such as: The teachers gave more explanation or repeating the explanation, and they asked some students to assist their friends, and an individual approach. The actions taken by the teachers were working effectively to solve the problem that emerged.
