Abstract

Reading is an important skill for developing second language competence. The success of a learning a second language is by taking the power of reading. So by reading a lot, the students could improve their English skill. Teaching a language, English especially is very complex. In the classroom, we will face dozens of techniques applied to the students under the expectation that they are able to or easy to understand the lesson. For a teacher, it is necessary to find new teaching media to overcome the problems and not to forget to motivate the students. In this study, the researcher wants to know the effect of picture as a media to improve studentsÂ’ reading comprehension. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of pictures can improve studentsÂ’ reading comprehension on second grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design because the researcher wanted to improve the quality of English teaching and learning process in increasing studentsÂ’ achievement in learning English in classrooms. The subject of this study was class VIII A at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo which consists of 19 students. They were participants of actions. Data of this study are collected through direct observation. After collecting and analyzing data, the researcher found that the average score of Pre-Test was 58,9, the average score of cycle 1 was 69,5 and the average score of cycle 2 was 85,7. Based on the result of the action research, it can be concluded that pictures as instructional media can improve studentsÂ’ reading comprehension in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Kutorejo in year 2013-2014.
