Abstract

The learnerÂ’s success in learning English is mostly determined by their mastery of four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One of the most important skills that should be mastered by the students is speaking. Speaking is complicated skill because it needs many elements to be simultaneously used at time. Therefore, this study was intended to know the studentsÂ’ difficulties in making the form of interrogative sentence and the factors contributes to the difficulties of interrogative sentence by the second students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu in academic year 2013/2014. The research design of this study was descriptive quantitative research because the data were obtained from each difficulty in the form of number. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The population of this study was all of the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu. They consisted of two classes: they were class A and class B. class A consisted of 21 students and class B consists of 21 students. The result of the study showed that the students had difficulties with their speaking using interrogative sentence. The difficulties in making interrogative sentence at the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu is difficulty to difference between making informal and formal of interrogative sentence (43, 58%), not understanding about meaning of interrogative sentence (41, 02%), not understanding when the teacher explained of interrogative sentence (12,82%), did not the meaning about interrogative sentence (2, 56%), difficult in pronouncing the similar word (ship-sheep)(53, 84%), not knowing the pattern of word stress (17, 94%), knowing difficulty in reading (15,38%), not know the meaning (12,82%), difficult to learn tenses difficult to learn tenses (58,97%), lost their ideas because of thinking too long about the grammar pattern they would to express their ideas (23,07%), they lacked attention from the teacher (7,69%), difficulty to use modal auxiliaries (10,25 %), the difficulty of vocabulary were: noun, verb, adjective and adverb (7,69%), limited of vocabulary (51,28%), got difficulty using modal auxiliaries (38,46%), and not understanding the meaning in the interrogative sentence (2,58%). The factors contributes to the difficulties of interrogative sentence by the second students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu is no self-confident (58, 97%), afraid of making mistake pronunciation (10, 25%), afraid of the teacher(2, 56%), lazy to participant (28, 20%), limitation vocabulary,(53, 84%), afraid of saying interrogative sentence(23. 07%), cannot make a sentence (23, 07%), lazy to participate (23, 07%),afraid of making in pronouncing (38, 46%), dislike the activity (discussion/ dialog) (35, 89%), technique of teaching by the teacher not interest (2, 56%), and never using interrogative sentence (64, 10%)
