Abstract

English is one of the International languages that are learned by people in Indonesia. English has four skills; they are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Reading and speaking demand specific pronunciation for those who are learning English. Pronunciation is a way in which language is spoken. If we have good pronunciation, it will be impact on our speaking skill even in reading. On the other way, if we have bad pronunciation, it will be impact on our speaking skill even in reading. This research is done to collect information on the error analysis of English students of ESP 2 Program at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The problems under investigation are dealing with the errors made by the English students of ESP 2 Program at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang in pronouncing English words, and the most dominant errors made by the English students of ESP 2 Program at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang in pronouncing English words. The purpose of this study is to find out what types of errors made by the students on pronouncing English words and to find out the most dominant errors made by the English students of ESP 2 Program at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang in pronouncing English words. The study used a descriptive design because there was no administration and control group as found in experimental research. The English students of ESP 2 Program at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang were used as the population and the number of the students involve in this research were 295 students. The writer selected 10% from the population and 30 students were taken as a sample by using random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was pronunciation test. This study reveals that there were three types of errors made by the studentsÂ’ errors in pronouncing, namely in pronouncing vowels were 1.381 (49,11%), in consonants were 526 (18,70%), and in diphthong were 905 (32,18 %). So the most dominant errors were the pronouncing of vowels. The writer hopes that the teacher of English that should drill sounds clearly, and gives the various exercises and various techniques of teaching to the students in pronouncing. In addition the writer expectation, the students that they should learn the errors by practicing their English pronunciation.
