Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is different from teaching English adult, because in teaching young learner, the teacher not only should have different method rather than teaching adult but also the researcher believe that the implementation the language that can be understood easily by the student. The appropriate ways in teaching young learners is using code mixing. According to Yee Ho (2007:1) code mixing is the change of one language to another language in the same utterance or in the same oral/written text. Code mixing is a simple ways to communication in the class with students or young learners to make know English with simple vocabularies. The researcher conducted this study because code mixing can make the young learners understood about the explanation or the simple instruction from the EYL practical teachers. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were 20 practice teachers who taught in the fifth grade of EYL course in English Department at UMM academic years 2013, the class name was Cheerful. The instruments used to collect the data were non-participant observation for the researcher did not always make an interaction with the subject of observation and semi-structured interview directed to EYL practical teachers. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher found that the EYL practice teacher of fifth grade at English Department of UMM applied 42 (forty two) codes mixing. Furthermore, there were three practice teachersÂ’ reasons applying code mixing, those were introducing the English language, helping the student to understand the material, using code mixing could be stimulated the learnersÂ’ interest in order to learn English language. The practice teachers had to use the simple vocabularies and meaningful expression in teaching English to make student interest and active during the learning process in the class.
