Abstract

There are many language varieties in the society. Register is one of the phenomena in the society. This research focuses only on the registers existing in written language which is Tonymacx86 online forum. This research aims at identifying the registers which are used in “Native Ivy Bridge CPU and GPU Power Management” thread in the Tonymacx86 online forum and the factors of the members to use it. Tonymacx86 online forum was chosen because it has high rating of visitors. This research was conducted based on the theory of register particularly about the type of registers from Hunt (1999) which are formal, informal, motherese, over-formal, and reporting registers. It is also based on Wardaugh’s implicit explanation (2006) about the factors why people use the registers. This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative design. Through an observation and online questionnaire, the data were collected. The questionnaires were given to 30 members and there were 12 members returning it. As a result, it can be identified that there were 26 (twenty six) formal registers and 1 (one) informal register in the Hackintosh online forum discussion particularly in “Native Ivy Bridge CPU and GPU Power Management” thread. From the questionnaires, it can also be known that registers can cause difficulties for people in understanding certain words or phrases of register at the first time joining the group; accordingly, the members tend to imitate other former insiders in using the registers. In other words, it can be said that the members perceive the registers as the common terminologies in the forum. Moreover, the members use the register in order to help them in the communication not to gain social status.
