Abstract

Language may have direct relationship with gender but language form has a range association which may turn to be related to gender. It is also known from linguistic research that in many societies the speech of men and women are different. This study focused on finding the different styles of speech and the amount of talks used by the main characters of Titanic movie. Titanic movie is one of the greatest movies. It was 1997 American epicromance and disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. The stars was Leonardo Dicaprio as Jack (male character) and Kate Winslet as Rose (female character). The objective of this study is to find out the different spoken language used by the main characters of Titanic movie and the amount of talks by them. A descriptive qualitative research was used as the design of the study. Document analysis was used as the instrument. The subjects of the study were Jack and Rose as the main characters of Titanic movie. The data were obtained through watching Titanic movie by DVD for many times then noted Jack and Rose conversation in all settings when they talked each other. The findings were analyzed based on the related theory and described descriptively. The results of this study showed that Jack often used colloquial style of speech. On the other hand, Rose used informal style of speech in most of her conversation. There was also quite different in the amount of talks between Jack and Rose. Based on the results, Jack generally dominated the talking. Then, it can be justified that the spoken language used by Jack and Rose as the main characters of Titanic movie are different based on their style of speech and the amount of talks.
