Abstract

Culture Shock is a mental state caused by the transition that occurs when someone goes out from his/her familiar cultural environment and discover that his/her familiar signs/symbols are ineffective. People who enter a new cultural environment might experience culture shock. They will face some difficulties on phychological feeling and physical distress. These might be caused by the cultural variation that exist in every country in the world. As what many experts say that entering a new culture for a prolong period of time is not as easy as they expected. In line with this background, this research was aimed at analyzing and describing of what the culture shocks are, the causes, and its solutions that experienced by Indonesian Students Community in Hamburg, Germany. Meanwhile, this research used descriptive qualitative research design in which the instrument used was interview. The data collected by interviewing the respondents, the Indonesian students who are living and studying in Hamburg, Germany. There were 5 respondents who were interviewed as the representative. The interview was conducted by Skype. Besides, the writer used snowball technique in taking the respondents because this technique involves individulas recruiting other individuals to take a part in a research. While, in analyzing the data, the writer used three concurrent flows of activities: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Having discussed and analyzed the data, it was found that: 1) The Indonesian students experienced culture shock through the symptoms such as loss of appetite (food) and insomnia, fear of having interaction with the host country, the absent-minded, far away stare/tropical stare, withdrawal, irritability, delay and outright refusal to learn the language of the house country, excessive of being cheated, robbed, or injured, andhomesickness; 2) The factors affecting the Indonesian students in experiencing culture shock were as follows: custom and behavior, language, food, personality, host culture attitude, infrastructure (transportation), educational system, bureaucratic system, and weather; 3) Based on the result of the study, most of the Indonesian students overcame their culture shock problems by learning the custom, changing their habit, joining the language course, having communication with the local people frequently.
