Abstract

Method is one of important aspects in teaching learning process. It can help the teacher to achieve the effective teaching learning process and attract the studentsÂ’ interest in learning English in the class. By using the appropriate methods in teaching reading, the teacher can solve the studentsÂ’ difficulties and improve the studentsÂ’ reading ability. The interesting teaching learning process influences the studentsÂ’ perception because it affects their attitude and motivation in learning English. This study was intended to describe the methods used by the teacher, the way the teacher used the methods in teaching reading and the studentsÂ’ perception toward the methods used by the teacher at second grade of second grade of acceleration class of MAN Malang 1. This study used descriptive research design. The subjects of the study were the English teacher who taught second grade of acceleration class and the students of the second grade of acceleration class of MAN Malang 1. To collect the data, the writer used observation, interview, likert scale, observation checklist, and interview guide. The result of this study showed that the teacher used three methods in teaching reading. They were grammar translation method, jigsaw and student team achievement divisions (STAD). The teacher used those methods through three stages, they were pre-reading, whilst-reading and post-reading. Moreover, the students gave positive perception toward the methods used by the teacher.
