Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in the teaching of vocabulary. It aims: to describe (1) the activities done through the Total Physical Response (TPR) when the teacher teaches vocabulary, and (2) the studentsÂ’ responses toward the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in the teaching vocabulary. This study employed a qualitative design because it describes the implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) in the teaching of vocabulary at SDN Gading Kasri Malang and the studentsÂ’ responses toward the Total Physical Response (TPR) in learning English Vocabulary. The setting of the study was SDN Gading Kasri Malang and the subject was first grade. The instruments used in obtaining the data were observation sheet for field notes, interview guide and documents. Syllabus, lesson plans, and studentsÂ’ worksheet were included to complete data obtained. Observation was applied to know the activities done in the class. The result of researcherÂ’s observations was also supported by the teacherÂ’s lesson plans and the school syllabus. Interviews were conducted to know the teacher and studentsÂ’ responses toward the Total Physical Response (TPR) in the teaching of vocabulary. The documentations were taken to prove and to give real facts about the activities in the class. The result showed that in the teaching of vocabulary in first grade, the teacher applied the Total Physical Response (TPR). Both the teacher and students gave positive responses toward the application of the Total Physical Response(TPR) in the teaching of vocabulary. The investigation showed that the teacher could transfer the knowledge in a happy and enjoying situation, as well as students enjoyed the English lesson because there were many fun activities inside.
