Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important points of English learning. It is one of the language components and as a basic of a language. Therefore, vocabulary building should be given to children. Teaching and learning English Vocabulary in elementary school is the basic part that students should learn. The students of elementary school should master the basic of vocabulary, for instance about the studentsÂ’ environmental needs. Besides, in teaching learning process, as an English teacher for the elementary level is plays a very important role in the classroom. Nevertheless, based on the researcher preliminary study and interview the English teacher, most of the students had problems in memorizing vocabularies, lack of concentration and getting bored easily. From the preliminary test, their vocabulary scores was low because their scoreswere still lower than the KKM. The purpose of this study is to describe how picture and game improve studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery of Fifth-Grade students at SDN Dharma Tanjung 4 Camplong Sampang in academic year 2013-2014. To overcome the problems, the researcher used classroom action research. Classroom action research is conducted to solve a problem at the class. This study applies picture and game as media and technique. The aim of this research is to improve studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery by using picture and game. There are two cycles of the action. In each cycle, the procedure of the research consist of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative methods. The technique of qualitative data were interview and observing the process. For the quantitative data, the data are analyzed by finding and comparing the mean scores in pre-test and post-test. Based on the collaboratorÂ’s observation, the researcherÂ’ field note and the test result, the students made improvement in vocabulary mastery. The students can learn vocabulary more easy than before. When picture and game are used, in the first and the second cycle, students are active and enthusiastic in joining learning activity. The tests score result shows an improvement of the studentsÂ’ achievement. The studentsÂ’ mean score in the pre-test is 45.8, in post-test I is 87.6, and in post-test II is 92.9. It can be concluded that teaching English vocabulary by using picture and game as media and technique can improve the studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery.
