Abstract

One aspect which is usually done by people in learning English is conversation activity. Nowadays, conversation study has been paid attention in teaching and learning activity. As a part of speaking aspect, it helps students to be more proficient in speaking. The main focus in teaching conversation is how to build studentsÂ’ participation to express their need and idea by speaking in English. It needs teacherÂ’s creativity and proper technique in teaching. The purpose of this study were: (1) describing the teaching technique used by the teacher for grade XI English conversation at Madrasah Aliyah Bilingual Batu, (2) the problems faced by the teacher in using the teaching technique for grade XI English conversation at Madrasah Aliyah Bilingual Batu, (3) how the teacher solves the problems in using the teaching technique for grade XI English conversation at Madrasah Aliyah Bilingual Batu. This study used qualitative research design. In this study the researcher tried to study about the teaching technique used by the teacher for grade XI English conversation at Madrasah Aliyah Bilingual Batu. The instruments which were used by the researcher to gather the data were interview and observation. After the data had been analyzed, it was found that the teacher used twelve kinds of teaching techniques for grade XI English conversation, they were free conversation, guided conversation, interview activities, storytelling, making a drama script, role play, field trip, poetry, bamboo dance game, hot seat game, auction score game, throwing the ball game. In addition, the problems faced by the teacher when using the teaching techniques were the laziness of students and lack of teaching facilities. Besides, to cope with his problems, the teacher tried to motivate students in form of storytelling or wise words. Moreover, the teacher often invite a foreigner who takes the course in the Indonesian language course at KPN (Kursus Pembina Nusantara) to come to the school.
