Abstract

Indonesian government considers English as one of foreign languages to be taught in school from the elementary level up to the university level. The teaching and learning activities should be oriented toward the mastery of four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing is the most difficult skill for learner to master. Therefore, the teacher should use the appropriate media in teaching writing. The purpose of the study was to know whether picture series as a media improves students' writing skill of the second year at SMK PGRI Pandaan or not. The research design was quasi experimental. The population of this study was second year students at SMK PGRI Pandaan, and the sample of this study was the students of 2 Accounting I class and 2 Accounting II class. 2 Accounting I class as an experimental class which was treated using picture series and 2 Accounting II as a control group which was treated using non picture series. The instrument used was test. The researcher analyzed the data using independent samples test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that picture series was effective to improve students' writing skill of the second year at SMK PGRI Pandaan. There was significant different between means scores of both class. In a fact, the mean score of the post test of experimental class was higher than the mean score of post test of control class. The result of this study implies that English teachers consider using picture series in teaching writing, because picture series can help students to describe the procedure from the very beginning until the end.
