Abstract

Literature is defined as the best writing produced in a given language or society and that which is considered as a literary canon for all times. Novel is kinds of literature, it contains a number ofcharacters, scenes orepisodes. Itmay have more than one theme may have both minor and mayor crises (conflict),and climaxes. Ambition is a human's willingness to gains certain purpose or dream. Having ambition in live is an important thing, because person who has ambition will be motivated to work hard in order to reach it. This study analyses the ambition of Unity McPhee based on John Escott novel "Postcard Riddle". Here, the research problems are: 1) What is Unity McPhee's ambition? 2) What are the reasons of Unity McPhee's ambition? 3) How does Unity McPhee try to gain her ambition? 4) What is the effect of Unity McPhee's ambition toward her object? In analyzing this novel, descriptive was chosen as the research design. The data in this study were obtained from the original book of the novel Postcard Riddle written by John Escott, by identifying them related with the purposes of the study and nalyzing the data based on the ambition, and the characteristic of Unity McPhee in John Escott novel "Postcard Riddle".Afterword, drawing conclusion based on the data analysis. The research findings of this study are: 1) Unity McPhee's ambition was selling a big scandal story to the national gossip magazine. 2) The reasons of Unity McPhee's ambition are humiliation and passion. 3) The ways Unity McPhee gains her ambition are workaholic, competitive, curiosity, and enthusiasm. 4) The effect of Unity McPheeÂ’s ambition towards her object are anger and frustrate.
