Abstract

Speaking is one of important skills that need to be practiced more. As a part of non-government education, some boarding schools have policy to determine its own curriculum based on the students' need. The students have to communicate, for example, using English and Arabic, inside the boarding school circle, everyday. This research is to identify the teaching speaking techniques used by Ustad Salman in "Madani" boarding school and to explain the implementation of the techniques to his students in A. Fuadi "The Land of Five Towers" novel. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research design because there was no treatment as in experimental research. The approach used in analyzing this novel was objective approach because it only found out the teaching speaking technique used by Ustad Salman. Then, the researcher did not study about the author's life and background. The subject of this analysis only focuses on the teaching speaking technique used by Ustad Salman in "The Land of Five Towers" novel. In the novel the researcher found three teaching speaking techniques used by Ustad Salman; imitative speaking, explaining and discussing technique. The teacher implemented those techniques during the teaching learning process. He used imitative speaking to teach Arabic language. Then, he combined explanation and discussion technique during extra night-class. He discussed about previous and the next-day subject together with his students, when they got bored, he started to explain about some excerpts from inspiring stories and matched with them to the students' situation and condition.
