Abstract

Teaching strategy is chosen activities which facilitate and help students to achieve the aim of teaching-learning process. It is also a certain task to help the students in understanding the teaching material. Furthermore, teaching young learners is not easy. It is a must for the teacher to select the teaching strategy by considering many aspects, such as learning condition, teaching-learning sources, and also studentsÂ’ needs and characteristics. The purpose of this research is to find out the answer of questions: 1) What are the strategies used by the teachers of 5th grade on EYL program conducted by English Department of UMM? and 2) How are the strategies used by the teachers of 5th grade on EYL program conducted by English Department of UMM are implemented? The suitable method of this study was descriptive qualitative because there was no treatment and number as in quantitative research. This research tried to analyse and describe the strategies used by the teachers and how they implemented it. The researcher decided the subject of this research was the 16 teachers of 5th grade in observation during teaching-learning process, and took 8 of them to have an interview. The result of this research showed that there are three strategies used by the teachers of 5th grade in EYL program. They were presentation, demonstration, and game strategy. Then, every strategies were implemented based on their characteristic. In applying presentation strategy. The teachers were not only stand and speak alone in front of the class, but also they used various media and technique, like song, picture, flashcard, video, and role play. When teachers used demonstration strategy, they presented the topic factually and step by step. They also used real media according to the topic. Last, some teachers also applied game strategy. The teachers would explain clear rule of the game and keep control for the class. The teachers also prepared the media which is related with the topic, like sport equipment in sport topic.This strategy would build fun and joy in teaching-learning process.
