Abstract

The increasing popularity of online games in Indonesia has caused many players to buy virtual goods in these online games. This study aims to, firstly, find out the form of legal protection for the ownership of virtual goods for online game players in Indonesia based on the Civil Code and Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection, secondly, find out the form of settlement efforts that can be taken if online game players are harmed due to server closures. in Indonesia. This study uses a normative juridical research method with a statutory approach that refers to the Civil Code and Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection. Data collection techniques are carried out by prioritizing the materials that are of a literary nature. The results of this study are that online game players as consumers have rights as consumers. Virtual goods in online games are non-physical objects that have the same concept as goods in general. Owned virtual goods are objects that have ownership rights (bezit) but are not ownership (eigendom). If the rights of online game players cannot be fulfilled by the service provider, then it is obligatory to compensate for losses as stipulated in Article 19 of Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection. Settlement efforts that can be carried out can be through litigation or non-litigation channels which can be in the form of consultations, negotiations, mediation and conciliation.
