Abstract

Literature has a very close relationship to human life. Literature means the expression of thought in language, "the thought" means the ideas, feelings, views, reasoning, and the other operations of the human mind. Novel is one of literary works. A novel is selected because it reflects the condition of the society, in which values become the concept about what people think important in life. In this study, A Passage to India novel written by E.M. Foster is chosen as the object of the study. The purposes of the study are to find out the social values found in E.M. Forster's A Passage to India and to explain the implications of the social values to the theme of E.M. Forster's A Passage to India. This study used qualitative research design because there was no treatment as it is in experiment research. The data were taken from the novel itself and from other relevant references to analyze the social values and the implication of social values in E.M Forster's A Passage to India. The results of this study showed that E.M. Forster's novel A Passage to India contained social values which included: humanity values, social relationship values, family relationship values, and moral values. The implications of those social values were: 1) Humanity values should be used as a fundamental value in making relation with other groups of people with different background and should be the basic value in behaving toward others; 2) Social relationship value was that when the conflict happened, it was suggested for people to seek for the solution in order that the life keep in harmony; 3) Moral values in this novel were that helping others and being kind toward others should be done without seeing who they were; 4) Family relationship value in this novel was that the functions of family are socializing or educating children, helping, protecting and looking after them.
