Abstract

Code mixing is the change of one language to another within the same utterance or in the same oral/written text. In this study, the writer investigated the Arabic-Indonesian code mixing used by the students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang at Al-Banna boardinghouse and the meanings of code mixings used by those students. The writer observes that the girl at Al-Banna boardinghouse used Arabic-Indonesian code mixing in their daily activity. This study is conducted to give contribution to the English Department, such as to enrich the knowledge of the english department students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang about how sociolinguistic phenomena used in their environment and also as the reference related to sociolinguistic study. The writer used the Qualitative research design to describe and interpret the Arabic-Indonesian code mixing used by the students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang and the meanings of code mixing used by those students. The subject was the students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang at Al-Banna boardinghouse. To collect the data, the writer used observation and document. The result of this study informed that there were 74 Arabic-Indonesian code mixings used by the students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang at Al-Banna boardinghouse and the meanings of code mixings used by those students which can be classified into 4 forms of code mixings, those are in the forms of word, phrase, idiom, and repetation. Finally, the writer suggested other researchers will be encouraged to conduct further researches with more appropiate technique and subject in order to give contribution to Sociolinguistic subject.
