Abstract

Registers are language varieties that are used by the people in particular settings and situations. In this study, the researcher investigates the registers that are used by “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community in Malang. Registers used by “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community are understood by certain people only. The problems formulated were: What registers are used by “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community in Malang, What are the meanings of registers used by “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community in Malang, and Why do the “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” members use them. This study is conducted to give contribution especially for English department, such as to enrich the knowledge of English department students about how sociolinguistics phenomena in “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community, and to develop the ability of language and sociolinguistics among them. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design because the researcher wanted to describe the phenomena about “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community in Malang. The subjects of the study were 6 warga, 1 siswa, and 1 participant of “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” in Malang. To collect the data, researcher used interview, observation, and document. In the observation, the researcher observed the conversation between the informants. The result of this study shows that from 59 registers used by “Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate” community in Malang, there are 18 registers which are different from lexical meaning and there are 29 registers are similar to lexical meaning. Besides, there are 12 registers that cannot be found in Indonesian dictionary. Finally, the researcher suggests that this study will encourage other researchers to conduct better researches, especially in Sociolinguistics subject
