Abstract

Literature is thoughts, ideas, concepts, and imaginations which are expressed with the help of language. Furthermore, language and literature cannot be separated from each other since language is the basic material through which literature is produced, whether they are novels, poetry, drama, etc. Poem is one work which is condensed and concentrated form of literary works. It is not as easy as novel and short story to understand due to the use of figurative language. Figurative language is language which doesn’t mean what it says. It contrasts to literal language, figurative language cannot be taken literally. Such reasons bring the writer of the thesis to analyze the use of figurative language in poems. This study is aimed to find out the kinds and the meanings of figurative languages used in Edgar Allan Poe’s poems. The research design used in this study is qualitative. The approach used is expressive approach because it is stressed on primarily the literary works by author’s feeling. This study used reviewing of documents or artifacts in collecting the data from many materials such as books, articles, journals, and internets. The object of this study is the four poems of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems consisting of “The City in the Sea”, “The Sleeper”, “Annabel Lee”, and”Ulalume”. The result of data analysis shows that Edgar Allan Poe used simile, metaphor, metonymy, personification, hyperbole, and paradox in the poem “The City in the Sea”. In the poem “The Sleeper”, he used simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, hyperbole, and symbol. In the poem “Annabel Lee”, he used metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and symbol. And in the poem “Ulalume”, he used simile, metaphor, personification, and symbol. The use of figurative language in Edgar Allan Poe’s poems is to prevent the monotonous in to make the poems more readable and touching.
