Studying meaning including studying associative meaning is the way to understand how the words, phrases, or sentences deliver meaning in everyday situation of spoken or written. It needs related theories to understand well what the meaning. Associative meaning in this research is to know a symbolism that is used by language community to express other concepts. This research in general aims to study associative meaning in written text because sometimes to understand the meaning of the text is more difficult or ambiguous than in conversation. In this research, the researcher decide the types and the functions of associative meaning based on ChaerÂ’s theory that was collected from Jawa Pos published from 17 August 2013 until 23 August 2013. Furthermore, it was focused on the OPINI and JATI DIRI columns of Jawa Pos because there are many associative meanings are found. Qualitative research is used to give comprehensive descriptions and discover functions of associative meaning in the articles. Then, the data was analyzed by classifying into words, phrase or sentences. The result of this study shows that there are four types of associative meaning and its functions. The first is connotative meaning; it creates an extra meaning that is caused by the difference in social, culture, and norm in language society. The second is stylistic meaning; it creates stylistic which appears in language. The third is affective meaning; it creates the feeling or emotion of speaker itself. Then, the last is collocative meaning; it is used to show the correlation between word meaning and other word meaning that has same location in a phrase. In conclusion, different types show different functions. Certainly, the writer uses the associative meaning to perform their function which are related to the circumstance because it very appropriate to influence the reader to read.
