Abstract

In learning language, writing places the most difficult level. Therefore, teaching writing is not an easy task for the teacher. Teacher also should be creative and innovative in teaching writing. The researcher was interested in teaching them using picture because picture can be valuable resources for teaching writing. The researcher chose SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang to be investigated because in this school, writing skill gets less time allocation in teaching learning process of English subject. The purpose of this study was to know whether picture implemented in writing give better achievement to the students at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang. The researcher used two hypotheses that had to be tested, namely alternative hypothesis (Ha) and null hypothesis (Ho). The alternative hypothesis was Picture implemented in writing gives better achievement to the students at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang. While null hypothesis was Picture implemented in writing does not give better achievement to the students at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang. This study used pre-experimental design because the researcher did not use control group. The pre experimental design is one-group pretest-posttest design because the researcher only took one class which was involved in three steps, namely: conducting pretest of the dependent variable, applying the experimental treatment using picture in teaching writing, and conducting posttest of the dependent variable. After counting the scores of pretest and posttest of the students, it could be known that the result showed that at level of significance 0.10, the t-table found is 1.296. Since t-score is 1.616, it is bigger than t-table. Thus, alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. After knowing the result of analysis, it can be concluded that using picture in writing class for the students in SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang had given significant difference. In this study, alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. It means that picture implemented in writing gave better achievement to the students at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang.
