Abstract

Culture is the whole concept of religion or belief, knowledge, language, system social, economic system, technology, and art. Culture born and use by human. Culture creates human's civilization which puts human as creator, adherent, manipulator, and carrier. In addition, culture shock is a set of emotional reactions because of cross culture process in entering new culture and environment which are different from the own culture. The researcher tries to analyze "Seven Years in Tibet" movie to let readers have information and knowledge about culture shocks. This movie also expressed the history of Tibet that would be interesting to analyze further. This study focused on the Heinrich Harrer's culture shocks found in "Seven Years in Tibet" movie. There are three statements of the problems, namely; 1) what are the cultural shocks faced by Heinrich Harrer in the movie "Seven Years in Tibet"?, 2) what are the effects of Heinrich Harrer's cultural shocks toward himself?, 3) how does Heinrich Harrer solve his cultural shocks? The research design used in this research was descriptive qualitative by collecting the data and reviewing literature which are relevant to the topic to prove the data. Moreover, this research uses objective approach because the researcher does not need to study about the author's life, background of work, or background of society. The result of the research shows that the culture shocks faced by Heinrich Harrer were belief, language, knowledge, system social, and food. The first, Heinrich Harrer was dealing with culture shocks "belief"; Tibetan people believe anything stuff related to the 14 th Dalai Lama may brings salvation, Tibetan people believe foreigners are symbols of evil, Tibetan people believe any living creatures were their mother, Tibetan people believe clap hands may driving out evil forces, Tibetan people believe comet was another form of evil. The second, Heinrich Harrer didn't understand Tibetan language. The third, Heinrich Harrer didn't understand rules concerning the 14 th Dalai Lama. The fourth, Heinrich Harrer must follow unique Tibetan customs. The fifth Heinrich Harrer was dealing with unique Tibetan butter tea. The effects of Heinrich Harrer's cultural toward himself reflected on changing character became humble person than ever. The ways he solved his cultural shocks was by learning Tibetan culture.
