Abstract

In teaching English as foreign language reading comprehension is very important skill to be thaugth because it could be required in success almost subject areas. Considering that reading comprehension is very important for the English as foreign language, students should be trained how to comprehend the text. However, reading is difficult skill that takes years to master. Therefore, many teachers get the difficulties in teaching reading. This study is intended to describe the difficulties in teaching raeding comprehension faced bt the third grade English teacher at SMA Negeri I Panji Situbondo. The statements problem of this study are: what are the difficulties in teaching reading comprehension at SMA Negeri I Panji Situbondo? And how do the English teacher to solve the difficulties in teaching reading comprehension at SMA Negeri I Panji Situbondo? The design of this study is decriptive research qualitative design to obtain data considering with research problems. In this study, the instruments used interview and observation. The subject of this study was a teacherwho taught English in the third grade of SMA Negeri I Panji Situbondo. The results of this study should that the English teacher had a difficulty to motivate students. The students’ motivation to look for difficult vocabulary at dictionary was low. In the other time, if the teacher gave the homework some students did the homework at the class by copying to their friends. Besides, some students said that the homework was very difficult and they disliked English lesson. The teacher questioning, individual work, full class interaction, and teacher talk. This study suggests to English teachers to improve their quality in teaching reading comprehension. For the others reaseracher, it suggested to expand this study with other rteseach problems.
