Abstract
Now days, Education in Indonesia faces various problems that are very complex, such as the issue of the low understanding of student about mathematics. In education institution, either in elementary and middle level, there are many problems faced in learning mathematics that caused by the teacher and teaching and learning process. Another problem that caused the low achievement of mathematics learning is learning process itself. This research aim to: (a) know teacher and student activities in learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy, (b) to know student’s motivation in learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy, (c) to know whether learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy better than conventional approach or not. This research applied quantitative and qualitative approach with experimental research. The object of this research was the students of MTs Miftahul Huda Ellak Laok Lenteng Sumenep at VII (7th grade). The subject of this research was the study of mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy and conventional study. The technique of collecting data and instrument was done by using observation method, questionnaire, and test. The result of this research showed that: (a) the teacher activities in learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy can be executed excellently. And students activities in learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy can be also executed excellently, (b) Students motivations in learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy showed good result, and (c) The result of the final analysis which applied by using ttest with level of significances 005, showed that in learning mathematics through contextual approach with SPELT strategy better than conventional study.
